NSFC Vice President JIANG Song Meets with IPAM Director
On September 11, 2025, JIANG Song, Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) met with Professor Marcelo Viana, Director of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) under Brazil’s National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), who was visiting China.
Vice President JIANG Song highlighted that as two major developing countries in the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, China and Brazil share a long-standing bilateral relationship and significant potential for cooperation in fundamental science. NSFC has always attached great importance to cooperation with Brazil and has established productive partnerships with four Brazilian research funding agencies. We have jointly funded 76 projects, with NSFC investing over 45 million RMB, providing crucial support for academic exchanges and collaborations between researchers from both countries. He expressed hope that, guided by Head-of-State Diplomacy and taking the opportunity of the upcoming "China-Brazil Year of Culture" in 2026, both sides would further strengthen the partnership between NSFC and CNPq, explore new joint funding mechanisms for collaborative research projects, reinforce multilateral cooperation within the BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation Framework Program, and continue to deepen and expand cooperation in fundamental science. These efforts are expected to deliver more mutually beneficial outcomes, establish a new model for fundamental science exchanges and cooperation among major Global South countries, and contribute to building the China-Brazil community with a shared future.
Professor Viana emphasized that the Brazilian government places great importance on S&T cooperation with China. He is visiting China at the request of CNPq President, with the core mission of discussing ways to deepen collaboration with Chinese partners. He stated that CNPq is willing to work closely with NSFC to further improve joint funding mechanisms and provide strong support for enhanced exchanges and cooperation between scientists from both countries. He also expressed hope that, building on existing agreements, new joint project funding efforts could be launched as soon as possible, and that exchanges between researchers and young students in key areas such as mathematics could be promoted to elevate bilateral S&T cooperation to a higher level.
During the meeting, Dr. FAN Yingjie, Director General of the Bureau of International Cooperation, briefed the participants on NSFC’s international cooperation and its partnership with Brazil. Both sides held in-depth discussions on establishing new funding channels, joint talent cultivation, and addressing global challenges.
