Certificate Presentation Ceremony and Pre-departure Briefing for the 2025 SGC Lindau Program Held in Beijing
On June 20, 2025, the Certificate Presentation Ceremony and Pre-departure Briefing for students selected for the Sino-German Center's Lindau Program 2025 was held in Beijing. Prof. Dou Xiankang, President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), attended the event and presented certificates to the selected students. The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Fan Yingjie, Director General of the NSFC Bureau of International Cooperation and Chinese Director of the Sino-German Center.
President Dou Xiankang first extended his congratulations to the 30 doctoral students and 10 undergraduate students selected. He introduced the reform concepts and implementation status of NSFC's talent programs, particularly emphasizing the critical role of international cooperation and exchange in advancing scientific progress and nurturing young talent. In his speech, he reviewed the tremendous achievements made in Chinese science and technology, especially in fundamental research since the establishment of the PRC. He highlighted the arduous efforts of two generations of Chinese scientists – those from the early years of the PRC and those following the Reform and Opening Up. President Dou pointed out that the historical responsibility for achieving scientific and technological self-reliance and strength now rests on the shoulders of the younger generation of researchers. He expressed his hope that the students would live up to this trust, uphold the ideal of serving the nation through science and technology, understand and carry forward the spirit of scientists, cherish the opportunity to interact with world-leading scientists, and demonstrate the caliber of Chinese youth in the new era to the world through their professional academic competence and open-mindedness.
Following the certificate ceremony, Dr. Yang Liexun, Deputy Director General of the NSFC Bureau of Planning and Policy, explained the original purpose and implementation status of NSFC’s Youth Basic Research Program. Two former Lindau scholars shared their experiences of attending the Lindau Meeting and their subsequent research work. The Sino-German Center also organized a pre-departure briefing for the selected students preparing to travel to Germany for the meeting. Since its establishment in 2004, the Lindau Program has sponsored a total of 667 participants. Most of the selected Lindau students have now grown into the backbone of China's scientific research endeavors.
Relevant representatives from NSFC’s Bureau of Planning and Policy, the Bureau of International Cooperation, and the Sino-German Center attended the event.
