Prof. Gao Wen, Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), attended the 9th Asian Heads of Research Councils (ASIAHORCs) General Meeting, which was held in Okinawa, Japan from November 10th to 11th, 2015.
The Meeting was hosted by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Representatives of science funding agencies from eight Asian countries attended the Meeting, including NSFC, JSPS, the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), the Department of Science & Technology of India (DST), the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), the Department of Science and Technology of Philippines (DOST), the Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI).
The theme of this Meeting is the “Trends of Science and Technology Policy in Asian Countries”. Representatives presented introductions on science and technology policy of their countries as well as the funding policy of their own agencies, and have exchanges of ideas and discussions on the relevant topics. As the Meeting decided, the next ASIAHORCs Meeting will be held in the Philippines and hosted by the Department of Science and Technology of Philippines. The future development of ASIAHORCs Meeting was also discussed during the Meeting.
ASIAHORCs Meeting was initiated by JSPS in 2007, taking place in turn in 10 Asian countries. The aim of ASIAHORCs is to strengthen and promote multilateral cooperation among science funding agencies in the Asian region, and to promote the science development in Asia. The members of ASIAHORCs include ten related institutions in Asian countries. Besides the eight institutions participating in the Meeting, there are two more institutions, which are the Agency for Science, Technology and Research of Singapore(A*STAR) and the National University of Malaysia respectively.
Accompanying Vice President Gao Wen were Director General Zheng Yonghe from the Bureau of Policy and Zhang Yongtao from the Bureau of International Cooperation.
