At the invitation of the Research Councils UK (RCUK) and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), a NSFC delegation led by Prof. Liu Congqiang, NSFC Vice President and Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited UK and Russia from Sept. 16th to 22nd, 2015.
While in UK, Vice President Liu Congqiang attended the third meeting of China-UK High Level People to People Dialogue, chaired by Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong and UK’s Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt. At the meeting, Vice President Liu signed the NSFC-STFC (Science and Technology Facilities Council) Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of NSFC with STFC’s Executive Director Andrew Taylor, with the witness of leaders from both countries. The signing of the MoU opens up a new chapter in NSFC-RCUK collaboration.
During his visit to UK, Vice President Liu Congqiang also attended the Sino-UK Joint Evaluation Panel meetings on two joint programs -- “Air Pollution and Human Health” and “Using Critical Zone Science to Understand Sustaining the Eco-system Service of Soil and Water”, which is also NSFC’s new initiative for Major International Cooperation Programs. At the opening ceremony, Prof. Liu delivered a speech to the 30 panelists from China and UK and re-stressed the significance of these two programs for Sino-UK cooperation, expressing hope to fund long-term, sustainable cooperation and systematic research between the two sides and solve the problems of atmosphere, soil and water.
While in Russia, Vice President Liu met with RFBR President Professor Vladislav Panchenko and Vice President Vladimir Kvardakov. Both sides discussed the status quo of the on-going joint research program and exchange program and the possibility of jointly funding symposia for Chinese and Russian young scientists and conducting multilateral cooperation under the BRICS framework and Shanghai Cooperation Organization framework. Vice President Liu also visited Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy and Geochemistry (IGEM) of the Russia Academy of Sciences and the Geology Department of Lomonosov of Moscow State University, where the delegation learned about Russia’s latest development in earth sciences.
