At the invitation of NSFC’s counterparts SENESCYT and CITMA in Ecuador and Cuba respectively, a NSFC delegation led by Vice President Gao Ruiping visited the two countries from September 15th to 23th, 2015.
In Ecuador, VP Gao attended the 1st China-CELAC Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation. The forum aims to build a bridge of cooperation on science, technology and innovation between China and CELAC nations, thus laying a solid foundation for future cooperation at a deeper level. The forum, the highest level one ever on S&T innovation between the two sides, indicated that China-CELAC cooperation has entered upon a new stage. At the forum, VP Gao gave a speech entitled Boosting China-CELAC Basic Research Cooperation through Enhancing Exchange and Exploring Opportunities, in which she introduced NSFC’s latest measures and achievements in international cooperation in basic research and put forward with suggestions on expanding China-CELAC cooperation in this area.
In Cuba, VP Gao conducted in-depths exchanges and discussions with Cuban science & technology administrative authority CITMA on a range of topics, in particular the bilateral cooperation agreement. The two sides reached initial consensus on signing a bilateral cooperation agreement to jointly fund scientists from China and Cuba so they could engage in cooperation and exchanges in the areas such as life and health sciences. In Cuba, the delegation also visited the Institute of Cybernetics, Mathematics and Physics.
Also from the delegation were Zou Liyao from NSFC’s Bureau of International Cooperation and Gu Ruisheng from the Department of Life Sciences.
