NSFC Vice President Liu Congqiang Visits New Zealand and Australia


At the invitation of MBIE, ARC and NHMRC, a NSFC delegation led by Vice President Liu Congqiang visited New Zealand and Australia from April 19th to 26th, 2015.

In New Zealand, VP Liu attended the 4th China-New Zealand Joint Commission Meeting on Science and Technology. During the meeting, he introduced NSFC’s funding system and international cooperation policy, in particular the latest developments of NSFC’s cooperation with New Zealand. He also put forward some suggestions for future cooperation in basic research between the two sides.

In Australia, VP Liu met with Mr. Aidan Byrne, CEO of ARC. They conducted in-depth discussions on topics including how to enhance substantive cooperation, how to fund international research centers and talents and how to ensure the effectiveness of program funding and performance evaluation. VP Liu also met with Mr. Tony Kingdon, general manager of NHMRC. They exchanged views on the latest progress of the ongoing joint program of Type 2 Diabetes and other important issues such as the collaborative area priority and funding policy in the future. In addition, the delegation visited the University of Sydney and learned about its research in geosciences, life sciences and health sciences as well as its collaboration with Chinese universities.

Also from the delegation were Xu Yanying from NSFC’s Department of Health Sciences and Liu Xiuping from the Bureau of International Cooperation.
