NSFC Vice President Liu Congqiang Visits Canada and the U.S.

From September 7 to September 14, an NSFC delegation led by Vice President Liu Congqiang visited Canada and the United States at the invitation of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

In Canada, VP Liu met with Ms. Janet Walden, Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Pierre Charest, Vice President and Dr. Bert van den Berg, Associate Vice President of NSERC. VP Liu introduced the recent development of NSFC. The two sides reviewed the agency-to-agency interactions in the past couple of years, especially those since the co-organization of the GRC Beijing Meeting in May 2014, and exchanged views on the future collaboration. Consensus was reached on co-funding Canadian post-doctoral fellows doing research in China, on which a Joint Guideline was signed by Zou Liyao, Deputy Director-General, Bureau of International Cooperation, NSFC and Dr. Jean Saint-Vil, Head of International Division, NSERC. During his stay in Canada, VP Liu also visited York University and the University of Ottawa.

In the U.S. VP Liu attended the 15th China-US Joint Commission Meeting on Science & Technology Cooperation, and reported the achievements and future plans of the China-US collaboration on basic research and biomedical research. Minister Wan Gang from Ministry of Science and Technology, China and Director John Holdren, Assistant to the US President on Science and Technology and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy co-chaired the meeting. Participants to the JCM meeting reviewed the progress on the China-US collaboration in various fields in science and technology and discussed future collaboration on areas of common interest. During his stay in the U.S., VP Liu also visited NSF and met with Dr. Roger Wakimoto, Assistant Director of the Directorate of Geosciences and officials from the Directorate of Biology, Engineering and the Office of International Science and Engineering and discussed future collaboration. The two sides agreed to further collaborating in the areas of Critical Zone Observatory, Dimensions of Bio-diversity and Environmental Sustainability.

Accompanying VP Liu were Zou Liyao, Deputy Director-General, Bureau of International Cooperation, Liu Xiuping, Deputy Division Director, Bureau of International Cooperation and Zhang Chaolin, Division Director, Department of Earth Sciences.
