The 10th China-Japan-Korea Foresight Joint Symposium on Gene Delivery and International Symposium on Biomaterials in Changchun

From May 29th to June 2, the 10th China-Japan-Korea Foresight Joint Symposium on Gene Delivery and International Symposium on Biomaterials 2011 were successfully held in Changchun and hosted by Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Wang Fusong, an academician of CAS, assumed the presidency of the symposium and Prof. Chen Xuesi acted as chairman of the organizing committee, who is from Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, CAS. Prof. Zhang Yinglan, Division Director of Asia & Africa, Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Prof. Zhou Guangyuan, Deputy Director, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, CAS delivered their speeches at the symposium. Some 240 experts from China, Japan, Korea, America and Europe attended the symposium.

The project of "Novel cell-specific and pH-sensitive non-viral gene carrier system",under the Asia 3 Foresight Program, which was funded in 2006 jointly by NSFC, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science(JSPS) and National Research Foundation of Korea(NRF), received two years extention of funding in 2009. The project will be finished by the end of this year. Since the project started five years ago, scientists from China, Japan and Korea have conducted extensive and deep exchanges and cooperation. So far, ten symposiums have been organized in the three countries. At initial stage, the symposiums involved experts only from China, Japan and Korea and now they gradually developed into a great international event involving experts in the field of biological materials including gene delivery. Participants for the symposium include pioneers and leading scientists in the field of gene delivery and biological materials like Prof. Sung Wan Kim, a member of national academy of engineering from University of Utah, USA, Prof. Allan Hoffman a member of national academy of engineering from University of Washington, Prof. Jan Feijen from Twente University as well as very active well-known professors such as Prof.Wu Shiqi, a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), from Chinese University of Hongkong, Prof. Jiang Lei, a member of CAS, Prof. Kinam Park (chief editor for Journal of Controlled Release) from USA Purdue University, Prof. Kazunori Kataoka (President of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan) from Tokyo University, Prof. Teruo Okano from Tokyo Women’s Medical University, Prof. Atsushi Maruyama from Jyushu University, Prof. Sung Chul Kim from KAIST, Prof. Doo Sung Lee from Sungkyunkwan University, Prof. Frantisek Rypacek from Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and so on. Attendees to the symposium included not only core experts, but also energetic young scholars and postgraduates. The symposium brought together scholars, senior and junior, to discuss the major scientific issues and future trends in the field of gene delivery and biological materials. The participants all agreed that study in the related field of biological materials, such as the gene delivery, drug control & release and tissue engineering, is closely related to the cause of human health. To promote further research and extensive application in related fields will make an important contribution to the benefit of mankind. The symposium got great support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Bureau of Foreign Experts of Jilin Province. The symposium is highly significant in the promotion of international cooperation and personnel training of China in the field of gene delivery and biological materials as well as in accelerating China’s development in this field.
