NSFC -JST Workshop on Genomics for Clinical Studiesin Shanghai

NSFC -JST Workshop on Genomics for Clinical Studies was held in Shanghai from February 4th to 5th, 2013, organized by Shanghai Chest Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University under the auspices of National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

Prof. Zhao GuoPing, Shanghai Institute for Biological Sciences, CAS and Prof.Sumio Sugano, Tokyo University jointly chaired the workshop as coordinators from both sides respectively. Prof.FengFeng, Deputy Director, Department of Medical Sciences, NSFC attended the meeting and delivered an opening speechand expressed his warm welcome to the delegates and experts of the two countries.Prof. Akira Nakanishi, Director of JST Beijing Office attended the workshop and made his remarks. Prof. Zhao Guoping, on behalf of the Workshop Organizing Committee warmly welcomed the delegates at the opening ceremony, and briefly describedthe purpose of the meeting and its preparations. About 30 representatives from the two countries participated in the workshop.

The theme of this workshop is Genomics for Clinical Studies. According to different research areas, the workshop wasdivided into 3 sections, namely “Identification of disease genes, genome cohort studies;MedicalApplicationofGenomics and Technologies for Genomics” with a total of 22 presentations.

During the workshop, participants held extensive discussions and exchanges and provided valuable suggestions for future Sino-Japanese cooperation in clinical genomics. At closing ceremony, Prof. Zhao Guoping, on behalf of the Conference Organizing Committee delivered a comprehensive summary of the meeting, and again, extended thanks to experts from countries and allthe working staff in theworkshopsecretariat for their contribution to the meeting, and hoped that the participants would carry out more cooperation and exchanges in the future and make greater contribution to the Sino-Japanese collaborative research in related fields.

Since 2004, NSFC and JST have successfully co-organized eightbilateral workshops,providing opportunities for Sino-Japanese scientists to have full exchanges and projects designs prior to application. Based on that, NSFC and JST have jointly solicited international collaborative research projects. So far, 42 international collaborative research projects have been granted with a total funding of 57.48 million yuan.

After the workshop, participants visited the Institute of Health Sciences, CAS and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
