NSFC President Meets with JST Counterpart

On March 8th, Prof. Yang Wei, President of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) received a Japanese delegation headed by Dr.Michiharu Nakamura, President of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Prof. Yang delivered a welcome address at the beginning ofthe meeting and then briefed the delegationabout the latest developments of NSFC. Dr. Nakamura extended his appreciation to Prof. Yang for taking the time to meet him and expressed his hope to strengthen bilateral cooperation on global chanllengessuch as energy, environment, aging society, disaster prevention and health care. Prof. Yang gave positiveresponded to Dr. Nakamura’s suggestion and noted that the two sides should continue to deepen cooperation in biology and medicine.

The delegation also included Prof.AkitoArima, former Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technologyof Japan (MEXT) and Mr.KazukiOkimura, former JST President.As an internationally renowned scientist, Prof. Arimaenjoys a high reputation in the Japanese academia and society and carries out a wide range of cooperation with the Chinese scientific community.He was once awarded the“International Science and Technology Cooperation Award” fromthe Chinese Academy of Sciences. What is more, he was the only Japanese among the members of the International Evaluation Committee during the international evaluationonNSFC’s funding performance. During the meeting, Prof.AkitoArimacongratulated China on its tremendous progress made in recent years and hoped to further strengthen not only Sino-Japanese cooperation in science and technology, but also cooperation between China, Japan and Korea.

Present at the meeting from the Chinese side were Prof. Liu Congqiang, VP of NSFC, Prof. MengXianping, Director General of BureauofPlanning, Prof. Dong Erdan, Executive Deputy Director General of Health Department and Prof. Chang Qing, Director General of Bureau of International Cooperation, and others from NSFC.
