NSFC Vice President Attends IIASA Council Meeting

Prof. Liu Congqiang, NSFC Vice President led a delegation to attend the 83rd meeting of the IIASA Council at Vienna Austria from November 10-12th, 2013. More than 40 representatives form 21 countries such as USA, China, Russia, Germany, Norway, Australia, Japan and South Africa were present at the meeting.The Council listened to the presentation on Selected Science Highlights since June Council Meeting by Prof. Pavel Kabat, Director General and CEO of IIASA, disussed the proposal for revised institute management and administrative struture,and a plan to develop a network of IIASA distinguished visiting scholars and Global Think Tank.Prof. Liu Congqiangwas elected at the meeting as a member of IIASA Executive committee and Vice Chairman of Membership committee.On the sideline of the meeting, Prof. Liu had a meeting respectively with Chinese scholars in IIASA and Counselor Hu Bin, Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and Other Organization in Vienna.

Founded in 1972, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) conducts policy-oriented research into issues of a global nature that are too large or too complex to be solved by a single country or academic discipline. The science issuesconcerned by IIASA through its accomplished system analysis and modeling include energy, water, food, climate change and population growth. NSFC joined IIASA in January 2002 which is now composed of 21 member countries. NSFC would not only participate even more actively in IIASA’s research programs and play an important role in future, but also provide policy support for China to solve science problems in related fields by making use of the research and international platform at IIASA.
